Dancer from the Dance: Underworld by Don DeLillo
This is another quote from T.M. She said she did not think much of modern fiction writers who reference their own lives instead of inventing new material, and she used to tell her creative writing students, "I don't want to hear about your little life, OK?" On this I heartily disagree as one of my favorite quotes is by Gide "Out of yourself--create." If I take all my experiences as a white, queer (now older) man and sack it all in favor of what? Writing about a teeny-tiny world where being woke is the dictator: shit--I will have nothing. What I have is what I have: sorry but on this quote T.M. is pretty wrong.
Here again, my champion: "Do not do what someone else could do as well as you. Do not say, do not write what someone else could say, could write as well as you. Care for nothing in yourself but what you feel exists nowhere else. And, out of yourself create, impatiently or patiently, the most irreplaceable of beings".
Thank you Gide. Fuck You T.M.
