Poet in the Mirror: The Poetics of Portraiture
As with Narcissus in the pond, the study of self can stun us into the epiphanic—an ether where we hope to become supernatural, an ether where we may vanish into our vanity entirely. Studies of the self are one of the great traditions in lyric poetry. From self-portraits, to songs of self, to ekphrasis, to studies of others—there is an irresistible hope that everything we look at might give us a part of ourselves back.
In this five-week, in-person workshop, we'll apply the poetics of portraiture in a myriad of ways. We'll engage various lyric traditions and poetic modes—self-portrait, the confessional, ekphrasis, litany, the elegiac, mythology—as a means of explicating the self and exploring the dialectical nature of our lyric inheritances.
GOOD INSPIRATION!
I am performing at 11BC "Serenity Garden" on my birthday July 13 around 3:30...hope to see you there.
